Automobile

Author: Richard Migala

Michigan requires every vehicle registered and operated in Michigan to have automobile insurance.  Three coverages are mandatory. Bodily Injury Liability coverage; Personal Injury Protection; and Property Protection, are all mandatory.

Bodily Injury Liability – This insurance coverage insures you if you get in an accident and you injure or kill someone; the accident is your fault; and the injured or killed party brings a claim against you.

The minimum coverage was $20,000.00 per person, $40,000.00 per accident up to July 2, 2020.  The minimum changed dramatically on July 2, 2020 for all policies renewed or purchased after that date.  The new default limit is $250,000.00 per person and $500,000.00 per accident.  You may elect to purchase lower limits with the minimum being $50,000.00 per person and $100,000.00 per accident but you have to perform certain tasks to affirmatively choose lower limits.

$10,000.00 of residual property damages that insures other’s property if you damage it in an out of state accident. It is the minimum coverage as part of the Bodily Injury Liability coverage.

You can purchase higher coverages if you prefer.
