I have a close relative who I learned has just been scammed over the last six months. It started when she received an email from Microsoft advising her that her identity had been compromised and her computer had been used to distribute child porn. She called the 800 number in the email and that started a chain of events over the phone, on the computer, and even in person. The result being that she was taken for over $150,000.00.
Never, ever, respond to any email from any source that requires you to call or give information, such as your social security number, bank account information or any other information that can be used to compromise your identity.
If you get emails, phone calls, or text messages from any source notifying you that your security has been compromised, do not respond directly to them. Instead, go to the official website of the entity and make contact through that website or the contact number the website supplies. It is important that you make sure you are clicking on the official website link, not the first website that comes up in the computer search. Usually, the first ones to come up are sponsored websites, not the company’s official website.
Same with any suspected contact from any government agency. No government agency will email you or call you to tell you there is a warrant for your arrest. If you do get contacted by one, again go the government agency’s website and contact the agency to inquire. Do not respond directly to the call, text, or email.
I had her report the crime to the local Michigan State Police Post, and I talked to a friend there who advised me that her complaint was the fourth fraud complaint filed with them that week. It is becoming ever more common for fraudsters to contact you in various ways, and it will only increase with the ever-increasing use of AI
My family is becoming more pro-active to avoid fraud. We have a safe word that only we know, that can be used if one of us is contacted to try to say one of us is in trouble and needs money.
It is also important to use two- or three-point verification when using your electronic devices to access sensitive information. Even though it is a pain, its better than having to spend months, rebuilding your identity if it is stolen.
